Where we typically find wasp nests at Essex properties

Lofts and roof voids. Wasps enter through small gaps in soffits, fascias or roof tiles and build in the apex of the roof, on rafters or against insulation. You'll often hear them before you see them.
Wall cavities and air bricks. Watch wasps come and go from a single point on an outside wall — usually an air brick, a missing pointing joint or a gap around a pipe. Never block the entrance.
Under eaves and soffits. Some of the most visible nests, often near upstairs windows. These get noticed early and are usually quick to treat.

Sheds, garages and outbuildings. Built into corners of the roof, behind stored items or in rafters. Common to find when you go in for the lawn mower.
Garden trees, hedges and shrubs. Conifers and dense shrubs are popular nest sites. Often only noticed when pruning.
Underground nests. Built in old mouse or vole burrows, compost heaps or under decking. Very easy to disturb when mowing or gardening.
Don't try to remove a wasp nest yourself
Shop-bought wasp sprays are designed for small, recently-built nests. They rarely deal with an established nest properly, and they often make wasps defensive. The safest approach is to have the nest assessed and treated properly.
- • Don't stand directly under a nest while spraying upwards.
- • Don't try to knock down or burn a nest.
- • Don't block the nest entrance — wasps may come inside.
- • Keep allergy sufferers, children and pets well clear.
