Why wasps seem worse in late summer
Through summer, workers feed the nest’s larvae and are rewarded with a sugary liquid. As the colony stops raising young, that supply dries up. Workers go looking for sugar elsewhere: drinks, fruit, bins and picnics.
That is why September wasps feel more persistent. The nest is large, and the wasps are out and about.
An active autumn nest can still sting
Cooler mornings do not make a nest safe. A busy entrance by a door, patio or play area is still a risk until the colony dies. Mowing near a ground nest or trimming a hedge with a nest inside are common ways to get stung in autumn.
- Steady traffic at one hole: still active
- Wasps by a door or window: think about treating
- Nest in an unused corner: may be fine to leave
How autumn nests end
In late summer, the colony raises new queens and males. They leave the nest and mate. The new queens find a sheltered spot to hibernate. The old queen and the workers die as the weather turns cold.
An old nest is not reused. Once it is empty it does not need treatment, and you can leave it or remove it in winter.
Should you treat or wait?
It depends where the nest is and who is near it. If people walk past the entrance every day, treating now is usually sensible. If the nest is out of the way and traffic is dropping, waiting may be fine.
Call us and tell us where the entrance is and how busy it looks. We will be honest about whether treatment is worth it this late in the year. The price is still £125 for one nest, with a free revisit if it stays active.
Wasps indoors in autumn
Drowsy wasps or new queens sometimes find their way indoors in autumn, looking for somewhere to hibernate. A few lone wasps does not always mean a nest. A steady trickle into one room does. Close the window, keep away, and call us.
An autumn nest problem: common questions
Do wasps die after the first frost?
Colonies decline as it gets colder and the workers die. Exact timing depends on the weather each year.
Can I remove an empty nest myself?
Once you are sure there is no traffic at all for several days in cold weather, an empty nest is harmless. If in doubt, call us first.
Will next year’s wasps use the same nest?
No. Wasps do not reuse old nests, though a new queen may build nearby if the spot suits her.
