DIY or professional treatment?

Blocking a nest entrance can drive wasps towards other openings, including indoors. Ladders, hedge cutting and attempts to knock down a nest add risks. Leave the entrance open and arrange an assessment.

Shops sell wasp sprays, foams and traps, and online videos make it look easy. Some people do treat a small, easy nest themselves. But many DIY attempts end with stings, wasps indoors, or a nest that carries on. Here is an honest look at both options.

Found an active nest?

What to do right now

  • Do

    Keep back

Stay a few metres from the entrance and keep children and pets indoors.

  • Don't

    Block or spray it

Leave the entrance open. Blocking it can push wasps into the house.

  • Then

    £125 fixed treatment

One call, a time to come out, and a free revisit if it is still active.

The risks of DIY nest treatment

The biggest danger is disturbing the nest. Wasps defend it hard, and they can sting repeatedly.

  • Climbing a ladder to reach an entrance, then being stung at height
  • Blocking a hole, which can push wasps into the house
  • Spraying the outside of the nest, which only angers them
  • Pouring fuel or boiling water into a ground nest, which is dangerous and often fails
  • Knocking a nest down, which releases hundreds of wasps at once

Why sprays and traps often fail

A spray kills the wasps it hits, but the colony is inside. Traps catch foragers but leave the queen and the nest untouched. Through summer, a nest can replace lost workers quickly.

Hidden nests in lofts, walls and chimneys are almost impossible to reach properly with a shop product.

What a professional treatment does differently

We treat at the flight entrance with a professional insecticide dust. Returning workers carry it deep into the nest, so it reaches the queen and the larvae. The colony usually goes quiet within about 24 hours.

We work from the ground where possible, using extension equipment for high entrances. No tiles lifted, no walls drilled.

When leaving it may be better than either

A nest well away from people, in a spot nobody uses, can sometimes simply be left to die off in autumn. We will tell you if we think that is the case.

Cost compared

Shop products are cheap, but repeat purchases add up, and a failed attempt can make the nest harder and riskier to treat. Our price is £125 fixed for one wasp or European hornet nest, with no call-out fee and a free revisit if it stays active. Height, lofts and hornets do not change the price.

DIY or professional treatment?: common questions

Is it illegal to treat a wasp nest myself?

No, but you must follow product labels exactly. Treating bees is something we never do and do not recommend.

Should I block the hole tonight?

No. Blocking an active entrance can push wasps into your home. Leave it open.

What if a professional treatment does not work?

If the nest is still active after our treatment, the revisit is free.

    Signs of a wasp nest

Repeated flights into one gap are more useful evidence than a single wasp near food. Look at roof edges, vents and garden structures from a safe position. Do not climb up or dismantle anything to investigate.

What if you leave a nest?

A colony normally declines as the season ends. Whether to leave an active nest depends on its position and the risk to people nearby. A flight path beside a doorway is different from one in an unused corner. Do not disturb it to check.

    Sting first aid

Follow NHS advice for insect stings. Severe allergic symptoms need emergency medical help, not a nest-treatment booking. Call 999 for breathing difficulty, throat swelling or collapse.
